Orissa HC rejects TMC MP Pal's bail plea

Published on:

The Orissa High Court on Wednesday refused to grant bail to arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Tapas Pal, who had approached the court in February this year seeking bail on health grounds.

The court, however, allowed the jail authorities to provide healthcare facilities to the arrested MP at any private hospital in Bhubaneswar of his own choice provided the cost of the treatment is borne by the MP.

For his alleged involvement in the Rose Valley Group chit fund scam, Pal was arrested by the CBI in Kolkata in December last year. He was produced before a designated CBI court in Bhubaneswar on December 31. Since the lower court had rejected his bail, he is lodged in the Bhubaneswar jail for over four months now.

When the CBI counsel vehemently opposed Pal’s bail petition arguing that granting bail to him would hamper the ongoing investigations, Justice JP Das rejected the bail application asking the CBI to complete the investigations soon and file the chargesheet immediately. The High Court had earlier sought a report from the jail authorities on the health condition of Pal.
