Odisha Minister of Health and Family Welfare Damodar Rout on Friday said that nowadays the primary causes of chronic diseases of heart, diabetes and high blood pressure are industrial pollution, urbanisation and modern lifestyle. But people can’t avoid these causes, for which most of them are suffering from the chronic diseases.

He was inaugurating a three-day-long 24th annual conference of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT) 2013 at the KIMS here. He said people like to transplant organs to avoid certain diseases including kidney, heart and liver failure. It is happy to know that people are so health concuss and aware to donate organs.

KIIT University Chancellor Prof Nl Mitra said there is no law to control the organ transplantation activity. Government bodies should make laws for organ transplantation. Eminent nephrologist Dr Alam Almeida presented the annual report of the ISOT conference. KIMS Director Dr SC Dash welcomed the delegates.

The conference will deliberate on the demand for organ transplantation as well as inadequacy of organs and medical professionals in the field.  About 1.5 lakh patients in India need immediate dialysis followed by transplantation. Another 10 lakh patients are in different stages of chronic kidney disease who will eventually develop terminal kidney failure needing dialysis and transplantation.
