Opp seeks resolution on paddy MSP hike, stalls House

The Assembly on Friday witnessed as many as seven adjournments and could not transact businesses, except passing of expenditure estimate of the Rural Development Department, as the Opposition Congress and BJP insisted on a resolution for paddy MSP hike to Rs 2,800 per quintal and withdrawal of power tariff hike decision.

As the House met for the day, the Congress and the BJP members reiterated that a unanimous resolution increasing paddy MSP to Rs 2,800 per quintal be passed and the power hike decision be withdrawn forthwith.

As Speaker Niranjan Pujari didn’t pay any heed, the Opposition members rushed into the Well of the House and shouted slogans like ‘Chashinku Maila Kie, Naveen Sarakar Aau Kie (who killed farmers, it is Naveen Sarkar, who elseIJ).

Unable to run proceedings, Speaker Pujari adjourned the House for one hour at 10.31 am. As the situation remained unaltered, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker Sanand Marandi adjourned the House for six more times till 6.30 pm.

As a result, discussions during the Question Hour and over an Adjournment Motion on closure of paper mills could not be held. Rural Development Minister Badri Narayan Patra didn’t present the expenditure estimate for discussion and passage till evening.

However, Patra presented the expenditure estimate of Rs 7373, 85, 00,000 for discussion and passage at 6.30 pm when the House reassembled. The expenditure was passed amid noisy scenes and the Speaker adjourned the House for the day at 6.42 pm.
