Opp demands House panel to probe Majhi case

Published on:

Opposition Congress and BJP on Saturday demanded in the State Assembly that a House Committee be formed to probe the ‘shameful’ case of Dana Majhi, who carried his wife’s body on his shoulders and walked for 12 km in Kalahandi district last month, while rejecting Health and Family Welfare Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak’s reply that all were Dana’s fault and not of the hospital authorities.

Nayak had on Friday stated that Dana Majhi’s wife Amangdei was not declared dead and he took her without informing the ward-in-charge and without asking for an ambulance or a heresy (dead body carrier).

Opposition Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati (Congress) raised the matter during the Zero Hour on Saturday and said the Minister gave untrue data regarding the incidence.

“Dana Majhi must have taken more than an hour to wrap up his wife’s body. How come, nobody saw him,” Bahinipati wanted to know.

He said the CDMO’s report has no truth and was fabricated to protect the hospital authorities’ fault. He sought a ruling from the Speaker for formation of a House Committee.

“The Minister has misled the House by furnishing untrue information. We demand a House Committee to probe into the Dana Majhi case so that the truth can come out,” said leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra (Congress).

However, Health Minister Nayak said investigation is still on and a Staff Nurse and the concerned security agency have been suspended as per the primary investigation done by the CDMO. If more persons are found guilty, action would certainly be taken against them.

Dissatisfied at the Minister’s reply, Bahinipati rushed into the Well of the House and insisted on a ruling from the Chair.

Soon, other Congress members and their BJP counterparts stood at their chairs and demanded a ruling from the Speaker.

Amidst this, the Speaker called for a discussion on an Adjournment Motion brought by Bahinipaiti.
