The Odisha Power Generation Corporation’s (OPGC) expansion project of 2x660 MW thermal power plant (Units 3 and 4) crossed yet another milestone on Thursday with the award of the contract for the Balance of Plant (BOP) in favour of the BGR Energy Systems ltd. BOP refers to ancillary and peripheral plants to the Main Plant (MP).
The contract was executed here by OPGC Managing Director Venkatachalam Kuppusami and BGR Energy System Director (Sales and Marketing) A Swaminathan in the presence of Energy Minister Arun Kumar Sahu and Chief Secretary JK Mohapatra.
The Rs 1,573-crore contract comprises supply, erection and commissioning of the balance of plant of the proposed Units 3 and 4.
Earlier on April 27, the OPGC had awarded the contract of supply and erection of the Main Plant (boiler, turbine and generator) of the proposed Units 3 and 4 to the Bharat Heavy Electricals ltd (BHEl) at a value of Rs 4,051 crore.
“The OPGC expansion project which secured financial tie-up in November 2012 has been making steady progress, and with the award of the above contract it is poised to go into the construction phase,” said Energy Secretary PK Jena.
The Rs 11,000-crore plant is expected to achieve commercial operation in the 12th Plan period.
The OPGC, a 51:49 joint venture of the State Government and AEC Corporation of the USA, at present runs 2x210 MW thermal power plant at Banharpali in the district of Jharsuguda with a registered plant load factor of 86.48 per for the FY 2012-13. It ranks first among the State-run utilities in the country.
