OPGC divestment a big conspiracy: Cong

The Congress on Sunday alleged that the disinvestment of Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) shareholdings is a conspiracy and demanded that the State Government immediately scrap it.

The Congress said the State Government had acquired 49% shares of OPGC from AES at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore in 2020 and it was counted wholly as a State Government undertaking. But why the Government has taken a decision to sell the shareholding and floated a global tender, the party questioned.

While the Government is painting pictures of the State’s industrial development, why are the shares of its own power producing organisation being sold? Without power, industrial development is never possible. Earlier, by selling shares of the OPGC to AES, the Government had incurred heavy losses, said Pradesh Congress Committee Media Cell chairman Ganeshwar Behera.

He said the OPGC has its own coal block of over 50,000 MT  stocks, for which the OPGC won’t face any difficulty in producing power in the coming 32 years. He alleged that there is a massive scam behind the disinvestment proposal of OPGC.
