One-time Rs 50K aid to sr citizen assn in each dist

To support senior citizen associations to earn their livelihood, the State Government has decided to distribute a one-time assistance of Rs 50,000 in each district under the ‘Abadana’ scheme.

The Self-Help Groups (SHGs) registered with District Social Security Offices along with Vridha Sanghas and senior citizen associations would also be provided with one-time aid of Rs 50,000 for initial activity support and start-up capital.

Senior citizens in difficult situations often fail to raise their voice and earn their livelihood at individual capacities and are forced to live in acute problems. Such situations at times become fatal for them. Senior citizens can address their problems and day to day needs through organised efforts and sharing of responsibilities among them.

So, the support is provided to senior citizen associations and SHGs of senior citizens at different levels for mobilisation of the senior citizens, articulate their interests, promote and undertake programmes and activities for their well being, the source said.

It has been decided to make registered senior citizen SHGs/ associations functional and self-sufficient at each district level.

Therefore, the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disability (SSEPD) has asked all districts to submit a detailed report of every registered senior citizen SHG/ association and their expertise in various non-laborious / unchallenging skills.

The Government had launched the Abadana scheme in 2017 to improve the quality of life of the older persons by providing basic amenities like shelter, food, medical care and entertainment opportunities. Through this scheme, the Government also encourages voluntary action and participation of all stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and both national and State policies for senior citizens.
