The Odisha Medical Services Association (OMSA) on Saturdaywithdrew its mass resignation decision from September 1 following all-security assurance from the Health and Family Welfare Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak.

“We called off the mass resignation decision as the Minister and Department Secretary assured to provide security to doctors working at the Government hospitals across the State,” OMSA president Nirakar Bhatt told reporters after a meeting with the Minister and Health Secretary Arti Ahuja here.

NRHM Mission Director Dr Salini Pandit and other OMSA members were present.

Meanwhile, DGP KB Singh on Saturday directed all police stations to intensify surveillance and patrolling in Government hospital areas to ensure safety and security of doctors and other staffers throughout the State.

The DGP issued this direction in view of rising number incidents of assaults on doctors reported in recent days from various Government hospitals by the anti-social elements in the pretext of wrong treatment.

Besides, he advised CDMOs to install CCTV cameras at OPDs and other sensitive places inside their respective hospital campuses.

He too instructed not to arrest a doctor only because a case has been registered against him.

“A doctor accused of negligence should not be arrested in a routine manner simply because a charge has been leveled against him. Unless his arrest is necessary for further investigation or for collecting evidence or unless the investigating officer feels satisfied that the doctor proceeded against would not make himself available to face the prosecution unless arrested, the arrest may be withheld,” the DGP said citing a Supreme Court direction.
