The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the Khordha district Collector to inform what rehabilitation assistance has been rendered to the homeless tribals (Sabars) whose houses were torched by upper caste people at Sabar Sahi at Dadhimachhagadia March 21.
The direction of the commission came after a group of civil society organisation members led by Pradip Pradhan filed a petition at the OHRC after making a field visit.
The petitioners alleged that a violent mob of around 500 people belonging to the upper castes of Dadhimachhagadia village in Khordha district had unleashed a brutal attack on the inhabitants of Sabar Sashi of the same village who in order to save their lives lost no time to flee away their houses and taking this opportunity, the attackers torched the houses of the tribals despite the presence on police personnel.
Acting on the petition, the commission has asked the Collector to inform it, if any joint enquiry was made with regard to the assessment of the loss suffered by the Sabar Sahi people.
The commission further directed the Collector and SP to send their factual reports on the incident within four weeks.
