Two deer, which had strayed into Iswara village under Athagarh block in search of drinking water on Monday morning, were chased by stray dogs.
The frightened deer were bitten by the dogs near the iron gates of the village school and were injured. Villagers recued the two deer, but one of the injured deer died.
Forest officials after treatment of the surviving deer left it in the jungle and buried the body of the dead one.
As there is acute shortage of drinking water in the Athagarh fore3sts, most of the wild animals stray into human habitations in search of water and food. But due to apathy of forest officials the animals becom victims of poachers or die in accidents or attacked by stray dogs.
