Odisha Govt mulls to ban cell phones in classrooms

The State Government is mulling to ban mobile phones in the educational institutions to improve the academic atmosphere. The move has evoked mixed responses from students.

Higher Education Minister Ananta Das on Monday said discussions for banning mobile phones in educational institutions are on, and a decision in this regard would be made soon.

“So far, no decision has been taken to ban mobile phones. Different teachers’ associations have given their proposals. We are discussing how far this move is possible,” said Das.

The use of mobile phones in the education institutions, especially in classrooms, creates disturbance and causes disruption in the learning atmosphere. Teachers should also avoid using mobile phones in classrooms in the presence of students and also during evaluation of answer papers, said the Minister.

Keeping phones switched off in classrooms could not be a permanent alternative solution, Das said, adding that the move to ban mobiles is only meant to ensure discipline and a healthy study environment in the classrooms.
