Odisha cops rescue 5 girls from TN

Published on:

The Odisha police in association with their Tamil Nadu counterparts have rescued as many as five minor girls of Kandhamal working as bonded labourers in a textile mill in the southern Indian State. According to reports, a police team rescued the girls from the mill at Pallapalayam on the outskirts of Coimbatore on Saturday night.

The police acted after mother of one of the girls filed a complaint stating that her daughter and other girls have been working in the mill as bonded labourers.

The girls, said to be below 14 years, boarded trains to Odisha on Sunday morning, the reports added. It may be mentioned that thousands of people migrate from Odisha to various parts of the country, mainly to Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, in search of work. These workers are lured by Dadan Sardars (labour contractors) to provide jobs outside Odisha with lucrative remuneration. However, a majority of them are exploited either by the middlemen or employers or both.
