Odisha becomes major pain killer importer

Huge amount of importing pain killing injections manufactured by the multinational pharmaceutical firms to the State has created a matter of big concern for the druggists’ association.

The injection manufacturers have warned the Utkal Chemists’ and Druggists’ Association that had sought stern action against the medicine stores excessively importing pain killing injections of abuse of the injections (that come with the composition of toxic units to ease pain) in the youth community in the State and its import to other countries via Odisha, Visakhapatnam and Cochin.

However, the association’s plea went in vain as no step was taken by the authorities in this connection so far. Fearing adverse impact on the society and misuse of the injections, the association has begun taking disciplinary action against the medicine retail stores from Gandhi Jayanti onwards.

The pain killing injection trade has been on rise these days in Odisha, said the association secretary Choudhury Prabir Das. Normally, the injection is prescribed to the patients suffering from mental disorders, cancer and patients after surgery as well. While the State requires 10,000 to 20,000 pain killing injections, the trade has been increased to 10 fold in the past six months, he said.

The towns such as Baleswar, Bhadrak, Brahmapur, Balugaon and Bhubaneswar are the major importers of the injections of the genre. The medicine stores in the cities have ordered a quantity of 1.75 lakh pain killing injections in six months. While the highest numbers of injections was supplied to Baleswar (90,000), Brahmapur, Balugaon stood second in the list with 45,000, Bhadrak with 32,000 and only 8,000 injections were imported to capital city, Das said.

While the drug addicted persons have been reportedly using the pain killing injections, it has been found that the injections are imported to Vizag and Cochin through Odisha and from there to foreign countries such as Nigeria, Nirobi and Africa.

However, disciplinary action has been taken on behalf of the Utkal Chemists and Druggists Association against the medicine stores for keeping huge quantity of pain killing injections. Similar action will be taken against the suppliers who have been importing such drug injections to Odisha, Das warned.
