Octogenarian writes to CM over grab of his house

Even though the State Government claims to have taken all steps to protect lives and properties of senior citizens, an octogenarian is running from pillar to the post to protect his house from goons for years.

Nadiya Chand Kanungo, a former DFO and now a columnist, has written to all, from Director General of Police to the Prime Minister, seeking justice to a case in which some goons have forcibly kept his house at Madhusudan Nagar in the Tulasipur area of Cuttack under their possession.

In a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik sent on December 29, Kanungo informed that he is now spending days amid fear and mental pressure from some persons staying inside his house premises let out to a chicken dealer and his brother. He now lives with his family comprising his wife and children. He said he has already been attacked four times by the tenants.

According to Kanungo, on February 2, 2015, some hooligans, including tenants Prakash Sahu and Prahlad Sahu, Dullu and Nandu Singh, attacked him and his wife during cleaning of house premises. later, they too attacked his son Bibhudatta, an advocate.

“I was beaten up by the hooligans and my left eye got injured in a blow by Dullu,’ he said. He said one old woman Alaka Mitra and a woman  relative to the chicken dealer have been staying in his house from that day of the incident.

The house was in the name of Kanungo’s brother before his death. After his death, Kanungo’s son became the owner as legal heir, but domestic helper of the house living inside the campus came with Alaka, a relative of previous house owner, to demand the house.

“The persons are using the old women as shields to protect them from the police and they are illegally residing in the house,” Kanungo said.

Kanungo mentioned in the letter that the local police station IIC Sarif and his subordinates are protecting the tenants and their goons. He urged the Chief Minister to intervene into the matter and direct police officers to find the truth and give justice to him. Kanungo too threatened that he and his wife would sit in a dharna in front of the Naveen Nivas if justice is not done to them at the earliest.
