Youths of Sunabeda village of Nuapada district destroyed a number of cans of country liquor of three liquor shops at the village on Saturday and took out a procession shouting slogans against the liquor vendors.

"These country liquor shops are the shame of our village. They are the sources of all nuisances," said the youths at a meeting held after the procession.

Notably, the annual festival of Sunadei, the presiding deity of Sunabeda, was held on Thursday, which attracted about ten thousand devotees of Nuapada district and neighbouring areas including Chhattisgarh. The liquor vendors used this as an opportunity to make money. There were long queues in front of the liquor shops.

"It made a business of more than Rs two lakh for them," said the youths.

Villagers informed that they had informed police beforehand apprehending such nuisances by the liquor vendors. "But the police did nothing," said the villagers.

The vendors were punished at the village meeting and warned against  selling liquor in future.
