An under-trial prisoner (UTP) in the Nuapada district headquarters jail committed “suicide” on Monday inside the jail by hanging himself with his shirt.
“He was found hanging in his cell in the evening,” the Jailer said. “The incident took place when all other inmates were out from their rooms,” he added.
The prisoner, Benudhar Nag, who belonged to Agren village of Komna block, was booked under Sections 380 and 511 of IPC for theft and sent to jail custody 20 days ago. His family members claimed that it was a case of murder and demanded proper inquiry into the incident.
The Collector of Nuapada assured the deceased’s family members for financial support and an independent inquiry.
