NTCA team arrives to take call on tiger relocation

A three-member team of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) on Monday arrived here to decide on relocation of the wild tiger, which has reentered into the Nandankanan Zoo on June 23.

During its four-day stay, the team would take stock of the habitat situation at the Satkosia Tiger Reserve, which is believed to the natal habitat of the six-year old tiger that has strayed into Nandankanan. The team would apprised Forest and Environment Minister Bijayshree Routray about its proposal on July 3, sources said. The team will stay here till July 4.

The wild tiger had first entered the zoo’s safari on April 30 before fleeing from it by jumping the 18-foot iron mesh wall of an enclosure of the safari. About a week back, it returned and is back in the safari.

Earlier, the NTCA had suggested that the tiger be relocated at the Satkosia sanctuary as per the wildlife protocol.

“We will wait for the advice of the NTCA team and take a decision which will serve best interest of the tiger,” said Chief Wildlife Warden JD Sharma.
