Kishor Chandra Mahapatra, one of the eminent personalities of Nuapada district, passed away on Tuesday at the MMI Hospital at Raipur at the age of 71. He was an eminent educationist, a social worker, a political thinker and the same time a proficient speaker of undivided Kalahandi district.

Mahapatra studied at the Revenshaw College, Cuttack and completed his post-graduation in 1968. Instead of joining any Government service, he opted to spend his time in his home district for social and political emancipation of poor and downtrodden.

He organised youths and intellectuals during mid-Seventies to start a college at Khariar. After establishment of the Khariar College, he left it to the youths and engaged himself in political awareness of the poor. A women's college was also established at Khariar due to his efforts where he served as an honourary secretary till the death.

Thousands of people gathered at his funeral to pay him their last respects.
