Even as locals and officials are having sleepless nights over sheep killings in Niali in Cuttack district, another case of sheep death was reported from Moharanapada under Kalampur block of Kalahandi district on Sunday.

Villager Suresh Shabara’s sheep was found in a field with its head ripped apart from the body. Besides, another sheep was also missing. The sheep owner and a forest official, who rushed to the spot after getting information, were not sure how the animal was killed.

But the veterinary doctor of Kalampur said the sheep was killed by a wild animal as per the postmortem report. local forest officials said a vigil would be maintained with the help of local villagers so that such incidents do not recur.

Forest and Environment Minister Bijayshree Routray said a report has been sought from the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and the Regional Chief Conservator of Forest (RCCF) of Bhawanipatna Circle.

In Niali, panic still continued to prevail as Forest Department officials have so far failed to spot the wild animals which have carried out a series of sheep killing.

The Forest Minister, speaking on the Niali sheep deaths, said a new strategy to catch hold of the killer animals would be adopted and more traps along with additional manpower would be deployed.
