In a World Environment Day function celebrated in Bhimeswar, Brahmagiri, the dignitaries opined that plantation is the only solution which can compensate the damages made to the green cover of Puri district by the Fani cyclone.
Joining as chief guest in the function organized by Puri Surakhya Parisad, former director of ‘Odia
Bhasha Pratistan’ retired professor Haraprasad Mishra described the post Fani situation as horrific and unprecedented.
Prof Mishra told that the Fani has almost wiped out the greenery in the pilgrim city vicinity turning it into a debris heap.
People have now felt the brunt of heat throughout a day in the city with water scarcity making life miserable, said Mishra urging all to take up plantation as mission so that the earlier cool atmosphere can be restored in Puri.
He requested all to come forward to plant at least one sapling each to save the Puri.
There should be no compromise to environment, said Dr Balaram Dash, a lecturer. He said that he has never witnessed such a devastation in life in Puri ever since his childhood. He urged all to take up plantation as prime duty.
Dr Rama Kanta Kar, a yoga expert who was also a guest, demanded a complete ban on tree chopping at least for a decade.
Among others, leader Pathani Jena, Laxminarayan Patnaik, Ashok Kumar Adhiya and Saroj Kumar Mishra spoke.
