Utkal Bharat president Kharabela Swain on Tuesday said the State Government’s decision to reappoint retired teachers in schools under the proposed ‘Teacher on Call’ scheme is not morally wrong as teaching is not a mode for alleviation of unemployment problem.
“The problem of unemployment can’t be resolved by recruiting teachers. Because the importance of a primary teacher is that a mistake committed by him or her would directly impact students’ character negatively, which can’t be rectified further in future. While a clerk’s mistake is rectified by higher-ups, a teacher’s fault is not corrected by anybody. The Government should conduct a test to appoint primary teachers,” said Swain.
He opined that retired teachers, if reappointed, would certainly come to the schools regularly and teach students. “The reappointed teachers will never take to the streets for agitation. Resultantly, the dropout rate will be lessened in Government schools,” he argued.
