Dr Srikant Das, a neurosurgeon of the SCB Medical College and Hospital here appeared a bit calm when he came out from the OT on Wednesday after performing a six-hour operation. “Yes, at least two of the five ACs in the OT were functioning normally today,” a relaxed Dr Das said.

He had fainted inside the OT last week while performing a critical surgery as the ACs were not working and a giddy Dr Das was helped to regain his compose as fellow surgeons took care of the patient under the scalpel.

Things in the premier hospital of the State are now limping back to normal after a review of the situation by Health Secretary Pradeepta Kumar Mohaptra on Tuesday.

While over 50 air-conditioners of the hospital were lying defunct and nearly 150 of the 177 ACs of the nearby Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre were rendered useless, the two hospitals ran into chaotic situations last week forcing the Health Secretary to review the situation.

Taking stock of the situation, Mohaptra had directed the authorities to repair the ACs immediately. He had also indicated that whosoever was responsible for pushing the hospital into such disorder would be taken to task.

It may be mentioned that the SCB Hospital’s Administrative Officer had reportedly handed over the maintenance of the ACs to a firm which had no expertise in the job, and, as a result, the hospital ran into a chaos when the city temperature remained around 40 degree Celsius.

According to sources, a committee headed by the Hospital Superintendent has been formed to float tenders soon inviting bids to repair and maintain ACs.
