Normal life hit as rains lash city non-stop

There is no letup in the incessant rains which have been lashing the city here for last four days, triggered by a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. Under the unrelenting rainfall, many low-lying areas of the city were inundated. Bhubaneswar received 141mm rainfall on Thursday, while it witnessed 138mm on Friday.

The incessant rains brought immense hardships for the city dwellers as overflowing drain water gushed into their houses in the low-lying areas, besides creating waterlogging at many places. The unremitting rain literally paralysed the city and forced the residents to stay indoors. Vehicular movement too was thin. Many arterial roads were filled with rain water. Traffic posts including at Acharya Vihar were engulfed with water.

Rain water entered into various places and colonies of the city including Acharya Vihar, Uni-8, GGP Colony, Satabdi Vihar, Ashok Nagar, Rasulgarh, laxmisagar and Old Bhubaneswar. Slum areas were badly affected in the heavy rains.

Situation of the villages on the outskirts of the city got worsened when the rain water entered into the houses. Bharatpur, Kalajhari, Samantarapur and Bangali Sahi in Barang area, apart from Ostapada and Tankapani road witnessed knee-dip water on village roads connecting main roads.

Slum dwellers of Bharatpur under Chandaka police limits blocked the road protesting local corporators’ carelessness and misbehaviour when they sought steps for draining out of water from the slum area. Irate mob blocked Studio Chhak-Sum Hospital road for one hour demanding immediate relief and compensation to ten people whose houses collapsed due to the heavy rainfall. Khandagiri police led by IIC Sanjeev Satpathy rushed to the spot and cleared the road.
