The State Government has no plant to supply subsidised sugar to consumers under the Public Distribution System now.
Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Sanjay Dasburma informed this in the Assembly on Saturday.
He stated that the State Government had sent a proposal to the Union Government seeking permission to collect transport fees, dealer commission and excess price over `32 per kg of sugar from consumers by increasing retail price.
While the Centre didn’t agree with this proposal, the State Government is unable to provide sugar to consumers at `13.50 per keg by procuring sugar from the open market.
The State had sent the proposal after the Centre stopped distribution of Sugar under the PDS system.
The Centre had asked States to bear extra costs over `32 per kg while agreeing to give a subsidy of `18.50 per every kg of sugar under its new Sugar Policy.
