No power cut in State till Dec 31

With the Winter Season of the State Assembly approaching, the State Government on Thursday extended its ‘no power cut’ decision till December 31.

“The State is generating the required quantum of electricity for the consumers. So, there will be no power cuts till December 31,” Energy Minister Pranab Prakash Das said after holding a review meeting on power.

He said the Department would decide its next course of action after holding a meeting in the first week of January next year.

Earlier, the State Government had stopped load-shedding during night hours for Dussehra and Diwali festivals from October 11 till November 15. However, it had resorted to power cuts during daytimes during the period.

Sources said the peak hour demand for power was now between as 3,750 MW and 3,800 MW, which was being generated from thermal and hydro power plants.

“There is no need to procure power from private companies at this time as the State is generating enough power to meet the demand of consumers,” said the Minister

It may be noted that the Grid Corporation of Odisha limited (Gridco) had urged 24 captive power generators to increase their production a month ago.   Some experts feel that the power need of the State would decrease gradually during winter season, which has already set in.
