A lowering of guards on the parts of the media in general and the Government about the spread of coronavirus for last several weeks seems to be incomprehensible in view of the substantial numbers of Covid-19 positive cases being reported daily in the State.While Government officials consistently try to downplay the extents of infections and deaths, the media hardly highlight the incidences as if the pandemic is all but gone. In the result, the people obviously feel that the danger is virtually no more there and markets and many other public places are seen crowded with no real Covid-appropriate behaviour being followed. The shutdown measures are no longer enforced as was done in the early stages of the outbreak of pandemic. The Government’s awareness campaign about the deadly disease and its devastating impact on aspects of life and livelihoods has since long flagged off even though, to cite an instance, as many as 1,243 new Covid cases were reported on Sunday after a day of a marginally-declined number of 1,096.
