No more craze for tech education in Odisha

Published on:

With a near jobless situation looming large in the State, the craze for technical education among the youths is declining.

After passing BTech in institutions of the State, most of these graduates are forced to move out of the State for a job with paltry pay, which is another cause, dampening their spirit for joining technical courses.

There was a period when students used to face a tough competition to get enrolment into the BTech courses in the engineering colleges.

However, that interest and craze for getting seats in the technical institutions is a passé.

The number of passed out students has been declining over past few years. While 26,407 B Tech students had qualified in 2009-10, the number was 26,632 in 2010-11. It was 25,061 in 2011-12 and 27,273 in 2012-13. The number reduced to 24,356 in 2015-16.

The condition is similar in case of MCA course in the State. While 2,159 students had cleared MCA degree in 2008-09, the number was 1,134 in 2009-10, 1,298 in 2010-11, 1,136 in 2011-12, 1,279 in 2012-13 and it further declined to 946 in 2015-16.

The number of passed out students in diploma courses in the State is also declining. While 20,695 students had passed out in the diploma courses in 2013, the number was 19,369 in 2014, the passed out number was highest in 2015 at 30,461. Only, 16,106 students had cleared in 2016.

The students are also less interested towards ITI education. While 42,698 ITI students had passed out in 2012, the number of passed out ITI students was 43,555 in 2013, 45,958 in 2014, 35,559 in 2015. The number declined to 1,682 in 2016.

Not getting a job after spending huge amount of money on the technical education is said to be one of the reasons behind lack of desire for the courses like degree, diploma engineering, ITI and MCA. The State runs engineering institutions also witness such crisis due to lack of placement.

While 418 students were selected in the campus in Burla VSSUT in 2015-16, none has been able to get job. There was no placement in IGIT, Sarang in the year 2015-16 and 2016-17. Only the students of Bhubaneswar CET and Cuttack IIMT have got jobs during the year 2016-17.

Out of the total 1, 05,764 technical students who registered their names in different employment offices in the State, only 258 got jobs.
