The Chief Secretary of Odisha has failed to respond to the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) notice over the plight of a destitute. The case has been lingering for more than three years.
Citing the serious human rights issues of Gaurmani Swain of Eram, Rathapada in Bhadrak, a destitute lady who has nothing in the world and none to take care of, rights campaigner Radhakanta Tripathy moved a petition before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
State Home Department Joint Secretary intimated to the NHRC that the Government of Odisha had enhanced the rate of old age pension from Rs 200 to Rs 300 to the beneficiaries between the age group of 60 to 79 years and from Rs 200 to Rs 500 to the beneficiaries of the age group of above 80 years. It was stated that a proposal for further enhancement of the old age pension was not under the consideration of the State Government.
In his rejoinder, Tripathy stated that the State Government failed to ensure house and medical care to the victim. He also sought for increase of old age pension in the State.
The NHRC considered the allegation of human rights violation of the victim by the authorities of the State and transmitted the comments of the petitioner to the Chief Secretary, Government of Odisha, for his examination and necessary action.
However, even today nothing has been done for the victim who still resides helplessly as her house constructed under IAY has no roof. The NHRC sought an ATR within six weeks from the Odisha Government as the latest step.
