People suffering from eye diseases in Gajapati district are now spending a lot of money on travelling to far-off places as the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) here has no eye doctor for the last 31 months.
Though the DHH Eye Department has two sanctioned doctor posts, yet they are lying vacant since Dr Sharat Chandra Mohapatra retired in June 2014.
“Hundreds of eye patients are coming to the DHH from different parts of the district daily. But they return without being treated. Those who know about absence of a doctor, they go far places like Brahmapur Medical College Hospital and Vishakhapatnam by spending a lot of money on travelling,” alleged locals.
When contacted, Chief District Medical Officer Dr Purnachandra Kora said he has already informed the
higher authorities about absence of an eye doctor in the hospital.
