No cyclone prediction for Odisha yet: IMD

Even as the Government agencies have braced up to tackle the probable cyclone brewing over the Bay of Bengal (BoB), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said a clear picture would emerge only after a low pressure system develops.

IMD Director General (DG) MrutyunjayMohapatra said that so far, only a forecast regarding formation of cyclonic storm over southeast BoB on May 6 and subsequent development of low pressure system on May 7 has been made.

“After the low pressure forms, it will gradually concentrate into a depression around May 8 and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards the central BoB,” said Mohapatra.

According to him, even though Odisha is prone to summer cyclones, it doesn’t mean that all cyclones would affect the State.

“We have not issued any prediction about the probable cyclone and its impact on Odisha. We will be in a position to come up with pinpoint prediction over its path, intensity and other aspects after the low pressure area develops,” Mohapatra added.

Meanwhile,  the Regional Office of the IMD here issued a Yellow warning and said thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of Baleswar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Nuapada, Balangir, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi in the next 24 hours.
