Coordination between tribals and Government functionaries including elected representatives and bureaucrats would help Odisha become a prosperous State, opined Governor Dr SC Jamir here on Tuesday.
He was speaking as the chief guest on the occasion of the World Human Rights Day celebration organised by ASHRA, a federation of tribal organisations in Sundargarh district. Replying to a request to exercise his special power under Article 244 of the Constitution for a scheduled area like Sundagarh district Dr Jamir informed that in a democracy like India there should be no confrontation between the elected Government and head of the State (Governor).
As per the Constitution, there are ample provisions to make law at the State Assembly, which also has tribal representatives, he said. He called upon tribals to have a cordial relationship with Government officials as well as to create a voluntary team from among themselves for development of their areas by which the overall development process would run smoothly.
He also called upon tribals to prepare a blueprint for next thirty years and discuss it with Government officials for their development in various spheres. Earlier, former Odisha High Court judge M Pappana spoke about the importance of the Human Rights Day. Social and human rights activist from Jharkhand Stan Swamy gave the keynote address while Rev KK Kujur, Bishop of Rourkela, spoke about the importance of human values in the changing situation of the society. The programme was coordinated by Fr Celestine Xaxa. Vice-president of Akhil Bharat Adivasi Mahasabha Bijay Kujur also spoke on the occasion. It was Dr Jamir’s maiden visit here.
