NITR students end stir after tripartite talks

Published on:

After a tripartite discussion on Thursday forenoon among the Director, Deans, faculties and students in an open house, the NIT, Rourkela (NITR) students, who were in agitation since May 25, called off their stir.

On revelation about NITR Security Officer Balaram Champatiray’s sexual exploitation of lady security guards in his office chamber and residence, the students of PhD and MTech were on stir demanding termination of service of Champatiray and lodging of an FIR against him.

Though two days later, the Director put the accused under suspension, he hesitated to lodge any FIR with police. So, the students had intensified their stir, adding the demand for removal of Director Sunil Sarangi immediately.

Finally, it was resolved at tripartite meeting on Thursday that the matter of the sex scandal and other allegations raised by the students and faculties would be investigated by the Senate, and after the Senate’s proposal further action would be taken.

The Director declared that no legal procedure would be initiated against the agitating students and utmost care will be taken to protect their career.

In the mean time, it is learnt that an Under Secretary in the Union HRD Ministry would visit the NITR on Friday to inquire into the issues.
