Normally, during investigation of a crime, proof is collected through CCTV footage and statements of eyewitnesses or local people.
But now this long process would not be followed. Two PhD students of the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NITR) Harshit Srivastava and K Vinod Kiran have developed a device based on artificial intelligence (AI) named “E-Warn system”, which can be useful in investigation and curbing crime.
This machine will be operated through an App. Not only will it help in crime event analysis, but also help in traffic control, pollution monitoring and above all alerting before an accident.
The machine will communicate the message to the police, ambulance and family members of the victim suo-motto. The multi-purpose machine has obtained the patent and very soon will be launched in market, informed the inventors.
According to them, the machine will work in four dimensions. It will identify the crime activities, through artificial intelligence managed camera.
The camera will not only capture the footage but also will send the warning message to the owner who has installed the camera. Besides, if a suspected person is roaming out side of a house or entering the house carrying deadly weapons, it will send an advance message.
It will also help a lot in minimsing the loss of life and wealth in accident. If this machine is fixed in the vehicle, then it will alert the driver regarding the vehicles over speed and alert the driver if he drowses. It will also efficiently manage traffic control. The device named eWARN SYSTEM provides an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled integrated platform to address issues like pollution monitoring, accident detection, crime event analysis, and traffic analysis with management.
The system uses a hybrid configuration (i.e., the combination of edge computation, fog computation, and cloud computation). All the real-time data such as various pollutant levels (AQI), live video streams, vehicle-related signals such as vibration, sound, etc. are captured by appropriate sensors.
Then low-end computations such as acquisition, pre-processing, etc. are performed at the edge device to minimize the time latency. It may be noted here that the developers were involved in IMPRINT project, a Make in India Initiative since 2017.
The main objective was product development; later on, they thought of developing some products for the society and do the commercialization through start-up initiations.
Then the start-up E-warn system came into existence on June 21 by them, mentored by Prof Santosh Kumar Das of NITR. More than 50 members have been involved directly and indirectly in this project including BTech, MTech and PhD students for the development of these products since 2017.
