The rising rate of crimes in Ganjam police district is a matter of great worry both for the public and the police. As many as 317 cases have been registered in different police stations in the district in the month of June alone. Of these cases, nine are related to murder and seven related to rape. The police, however, have succeeded in arresting 17 persons involved in these two crimes.
Similarly, 11 persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in three cases of dacoity and 37 have been arrested in 32 cases of looting and burglary.
This was disclosed by Additional SP of Ganjam Prasant Kumar Baliarsingh at a Press meet at Ganjam police headquarters at Chhatrapur on Friday. Even some absconding criminals were also arrested, he added. In June too, 10 persons died in 32 road accidents. Among others, DSP Subash Chandra Acharya and Crime Branch DSP RK Mallik were present at the news conference.
According to intellectual circles, vacant posts of police officers and the consequential increase of workload in most of the police stations are responsible for ineffective crime control and filing of chargesheets.
Four police stations, Ganjam, Tarasing, Aryapalli Seashore and Chhatrapur Vidyut police station, in Ganjam police district do not have IICs at present. As a result, Chhatrapur police station IIC Dillip Tripathy and Chamakhandi IIC Ashok Parida are kept in charge of two each of these four police stations in addition to their own responsibilities. Four new IICs would be posted in these four police stations soon, said Additional SP Baliarsingh.
