Nilgiri children's park now a grazing ground

A plan to build a children’s park in Nilgiri NAC has been nipped in the bud due to callous attitude of the local administration. Nilgiri while attained the status of NAC in 1984, for its expansion, growth and facilities, several measures were undertaken. Under the vision a children park project was mooted.

Accordingly in the year 2008-09,  69 decimals of land under Kahalia mouza in front of Nilgiri police station was handed over to the NAC by the administration for realization of project and in the same year Rs3 lakh was initially  granted for preliminary works .With the fund about  Rs7.62 lakh,  the  construction of boundary wall for the park was completed. Further in 2011-12 for beautification, electrification and children plying implements about Rs10 lakh was given.

Despite spending about Rs 16 lakh, the project has not come up and on the other hand, herbs, shrubs and unwanted growths have defaced the ground.

The locals alleged that the park  has become the shelter for the stray cattle, goats and dogs being out of attention of the concerned department.

They further alleged that the Nilgiri sub divisional hospital after encroaching about 4 decimal of land by fencing wire was dumping hospital wastes into it. A local resident alleged, “Although the patch is centre of the town, no one is taking care of it. Even the NAC is knowingly keeping its eyes close. This year Rs 1 lakh has come for purpose of supply of water to the park but it remained unutilised.”

NAC executive officer Prafulla Nayak said he would look into the matter.
