The cardiac team of the MMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Raipur has successfully conducted a complicated heart surgery on an 11-month-old Nigerian boy.
The boy was suffering from severe heart condition besides high pressure and infection in the lungs leading to recurrent episodes of pneumonia. The cardiac team including Dr Sumantha Shekhar Padhi, Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Kinjal Bakshi, Pediatric Cardiologist, Chief Anaesthetist Dr Alok Swain and Anesthetist Dr Arun Andapan took up the responsibility to treat the critically ill infant.
Commenting on the procedure, Dr Nishant Chandel, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, MMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital told reporters in a news conference here: “Congenital heart conditions are not very uncommon in new borns. However given the complexities involved in this case no hospital was willing to take the risk of performing a corrective surgery on the child. Since multiple complications were involved, a structured medical approach was developed by our team of experts to tackle the challenges.”
The cardiac surgeons successfully performed ‘Flip Valve technique’ to repair hole in the heart. In this high-precision surgery a tailor-made membrane was inserted as a patch to close the leak in the artery which also reduced pressure in the lungs. Manish Trivedi, Facility Director, MMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital stated : “It is a proud moment that the hospital and our team of experts were able to bring a smile on the family’s face.”
