NHRC seeks report on police brutality in K'amal

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Kandhamal Superintendent of Police (SP) over alleged police brutality on innocent villagers.

Acting on a petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy the NHRC sought the report within four weeks.

“Havildar Chitaranjan Mallik and constables, Arun Mohanty and Santosh Moharana of K Nuagaon police station had allegedly snatched `2,000 from Kela Mallik of Tilakpanga village and abused him. The policemen also went to the house of Kela where they scolded his wife Prabhasini in filthy language. The practice of police in attacking the innocent people continues unabated in the State. The failure of the State Government to act over the issue amounts to serious violation of human rights,” Tripathy alleged.

He requested the NHRC to direct the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to arrest the culprits in the case and take legal action against them and pay compensation of `5 lakh to the family members of the victims.
