NHRC seeks report on ailing, starving Bhadrak family

Published on:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report from the District Magistrate of Bhadrak district pertaining to a case of a poor man suffering from various ailments without medical care.

The victim is Ajay Sahu, son of Damodar Sahu of Jagdispur village under Bonth block. Disease-struck, poor Ajay has been leading a very miserable life and battling for life without medical care.

The apex human rights body has issued the fresh direction acting on a petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy on the plight of the victim. Apathy of the State administration has made the life of Ajay and his family members miserable. The entire family members are deprived of two square meals a day, let alone incurring medical expenses of Ajay is not possible for them.

Ajaya was the only earning member of his family. However, he has been suffering from illness for a couple of months and is now bed-ridden. To cure his illness, the family sold almost all the property.

Now, they are not in a position to bear the cost of his treatment. The other factor is that since the family has no earning member, the parents of Ajay, his wife and a minor child are starving. The family is not getting any assistance from the Government despite several pleas.

The situation of the family has been becoming worse since none of the Government officials has been paying any heed to its plight. The social welfare benefit and free medical care schemes have so far remained a mirage for the family.  It is also being deprived of PDS rice.

The petitioner requested the NHRC to direct the State government to ensure immediate appropriate medical treatment to Ajay and provide all benefits under welfare schemes to his family.
