NHRC seeks report from Odisha DGP

National Human Rights Commission has given order to the Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) for an action-taken report within four weeks regarding the alleged abduction of a medical student from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar.

If a reply is not received within four weeks, the commission would be constrained to invoke coercive process under Sections 13 of the protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 for personal appearance of the DGP, said the NHRC.

The commission passed the order taking cognisance of a petition filed by Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain.

In her petition, Swain alleged that a minority community medical student of  Kupwara district is Jammu and Kashmir, Suahil Aijaz was abducted from AIIMS by the Maoist. This is violation of human rights due to inaction of the local Khandagiri police.

She prayed the commission to take  criminal action against  the responsible police personnel and pay compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the victim’s family if Suhail is alive or Rs 20 lakhs in case he is dead.
