The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Health and Family Welfare Secretary and the Angul Superintendent of Police (SP) in connection with a case where a newborn girl child was killed as the doctor didn’t attend her due to failure of the victim’s parents to pay him bribe.

Acting on a petition filed by Angul-based Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain, the NHRC has directed the SP to furnish report within four weeks.

The petitioner alleged that on March 16 the newborn girl Mamita Pattnaik and Chaturbhuja Pattnaik of Singh Sahi, Ward No- 4 of Talcher area in Angul died at the Government-run Mandapal Sub-Divisional Hospital in the district as the doctors did not attend the girl because of the failure of the parents to take `5,000 bribe as demanded by the doctor.

The petitioner urged the apex human rights watchdog to order immediate criminal action against the concerned doctors and authorities and `20 lakh compensation to the parents of the newborn baby girl.
