The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action-Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks from the Odisha DGP and Kendrapada SP over the kidnap and sexual abuse of a married woman of the district.
The NHRC passed this order acting on a petition filed by rights activist Sagar Kumar Jena of Kendrapada.
In his petition, Jena has alleged that a 46-year-old woman of Amber village under the Pattamundai Model police station was kidnapped on February 28, 2022 and taken to a village in Ganjam district. She was confined in a room and sexually abused for two months by the accused Debdutta Mallick.
Mallick had earlier borrowed Rs 40,000 and some gold ornaments from the victim for his sister’s marriage in the presence of witnesses. The victim allegedly demanded him to repay the money and return the gold ornaments.
The accused committed the crime in a bid to take revenge on the woman for demanding repayment of the loan and return of the ornaments, the petition stated.
Later, the woman managed to escape from the house and was rescued by her husband. Based on the complaint of her husband, the Pattamundai police registered a case.
