The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) over the incident of rape of a widow who later gave birth to a baby.

The commission directed the DCP for ATR while acting on a petition filed by Angul-based Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain.

The petitioner alleged that one Saraswati Palei, a resident of Jaleshwar Basti under Nayapalli police station in Bhubaneswar was first raped by miscreants.

“On July 07, 2016 the victim widow mother gave birth a baby and later threw the new born baby in a drain,” the petitioner contended.

She urged the commission to direct the DCP to conduct a thorough probe into the entire incident and at the same time prayed the apex human rights watchdog to direct for a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the mother and her baby for their rehabilitation.
