The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Angul district Collector-cum-District Magistrate for an action-taken report (ATR) over alleged harassment by a private technical institute to a poor student.

Acting the petition filed by Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain the NHRC sought an ATR within eight weeks.

The petitioner alleged that one Ashutosh Naik son of Khulana Naik of Kendrapada district was enrolled at the Maa Mamata Institute for technical coaching.

“Without basic infrastructures the institute is charging huge amount from students. Even the students staying in the hostel is being provided substandard foods,” said Swain in her petition.

“As a poor student failed to deposit the fee, the institute authorities threw him away from the institute violating his human rights,” the petitioner contended.

She alleged that though the victim had lodged a police compliant nothing tangible has happened as yet. She urged the apex human rights watchdog to order criminal/disciplinary action against the concerned public authorities and a compensation of Rs5 lakh to the victim.
