The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday sought an Action-Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks from the Odisha Energy Secretary and Sundargarh district Collector and Superintendent of Police regarding the electrocution of a worker at the Bisra Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on January 10.

The NHRC passed the order taking cognisance of a petition of filed by lawyer and human rights activist Radhakant Tripathy.

Tripathy has alleged that Gopal Tirkey was electrocuted while carrying out beautification work at Gate No 4 of the stadium.

Had the Energy Department, stadium authorities and concerned company taken care of live electricity wires at the stadium much earlier, this fatal incident would have been averted. Besides, it shows the negligence of the department towards the safety, security of the workers and gross violation of human rights, Tripathy alleged.

The family members of the deceased should be compensated after a free and fair inquiry. Also stringent action should be taken against those guilty, he prayed to the commission.
