The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Director General of Police and the Collector of Ganjam while acting on a petition relating to the brutal murder of a woman whose daughters faced eve teasing and harassment in Polasara area of Ganjam district.

Supreme Court lawyer and rights activist RadhakantaTripathy had brought before the apex rights panel the case stating that on August 21, 2016, Kamala Swain, mother of two teen aged girls namely Barsha Swain and liza Swain, was killed by miscreants against whom she had lodged a police case over eve-teasing of one of her daughter.

The deceased was severely attacked when she sought help from the villagers and ran towards her husband who was working in a paddy field in Bhabarada village. The deceased was attacked by the miscreants with iron rods on the way. She sustained critical injuries in the gruesome assault. On the next day, the locals staged a demonstration demanding arrest of the assailants by keeping the body on road near the police station.

Following the eve teasing of one of the daughter of the deceased and the latter’s attempt to seek action against the accused, the entire family members are now under severe threat. When the girl went to the police station for registering the FIR at Polasara, the police threatened the girl to rape her in case she persists for registering the case. The main accused has been roaming freely with the blessing of the local police, Tripathy had alleged.

He had requested the NHRC to investigate the case, direct the DGP, Odisha and the Woman and Child Development Department Secretary to act immediately and pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh  to the family members of the deceased and job to the victim girl with security.
