NHRC registers case in K'pada cop-civilian clash

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) registered a case over rights violation during police excess in Namatara village under Rajkanika police station.
The apex rights body on Thursday took the step on the basis of a petition of activist Radhakanta Tripathy. The petitioner had alleged that police assaulted the innocent people and shoot at them when they were organising a rally against a liquor shop. As many as nine persons sustained critical injuries of whom most of were women and minor girls.
Tripathy contended that the Government should have welcomed the anti-liquor stance of the locals as liquor is not only spreading crime but has been a main cause of poverty. Instead, the police resorted to a barbaric act which amounts to gross violation of human rights. He also sought an impartial probe.
