The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Chief Secretary to give compensation of Rs 25,000 to one Markanda Naik, who was allegedly beaten by police personnel at the Nalco police station in Angul district and has also sought a compliance report of the same within six weeks.
Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain had filed a petition at the commission alleging that police personnel forcefully kept Markanda Naik at Nalco PS without registering an FIR and even physically tortured him by tying his legs for five days in September 2015.
Though the commission on January 21 directed the Chief Secretary to showcause as why a monetary compensation of Rs 25,000 should not be recommended to be paid to the victim within six weeks, but he failed to comply with the order of the NHRC prompting the former to issue a fresh order.
