Taking a serious view of the alleged custodial death of a person at the Baripada Town police station last year, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed its Deputy Inspector General (Investigation) for probe. The NHRC has asked the DIG to submit a report within eight weeks.

Simultaneously, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has been requested to inform the NHRC Commission within four weeks whether the cognisance of the custodial death case has been taken by the OHRC and if so, on what date. The apex human rights watchdog also directed the OHRC to submit a report to it in this regard.

Human Rights Watchdog secretary Sangita Swain had moved the NHRC alleging that one Chandan Das son of Prafulla Das of Tulasichaura village in Baripada was severely tortured and died in the police custody at the Baripada Town police station in Mayurbhanj district on December 1 last year.

She has prayed the NHRC to take immediate criminal action against the police officials and a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
