The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered the Chief Secretary to pay compensation to the family of a person who recently died due to electrocution in Ganjam district.
The NHRC asked the compensation to be paid within eight weeks.
The commission passed the order taking cognizance of a petition filed by civil society organsation Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain.
In her petition Swain alleged that one Kanhu Gauda of Tiardipalli village under the Kabisuryanagar police station in Ganjam district died due the snapping of a unrepaired wire.
She alleged that this violates human rights due to the inaction of the concerned authorities. She prayed the NHRC to take action against the public authorities for which criminal action should be initiated and compensation of Rs 25 lakh should be paid to the kin of the deceased.
