The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered the Baleswar SP to submit an action taken report (ATR) within four weeks in the alleged Simulia minor girl rape case.
The NHRC issued the order acting on a petition filed by Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain on October 2, 2018. Swain mentioned that a backward caste minor girl, daughter of Budhimanta Ray of Abajuna Panchayat under Baleswar district’s Simulia block, had been raped and murdered by the local Sarpanch and goons and the Simulia police suppressed the fact without registering an FIR.
Arguing that the police inaction violates human rights, Swain urged the NHRC to take criminal action against the responsible police personnel and arrest the accused persons, besides demanding compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the victim’s family.
